Bio (in his own words): I was born in Liberia, West Africa. My family and I had to run away from Liberia because of the civil war at the time. We lived in Ghana as refugees for six years before coming to Canada. I came to Canada with my family to have a new and better life. Canada, a place of opportunities, allowed me to explore the arts of African drumming, dance and visual arts. While doing so, I'm able to celebrate and share my culture. I studied west African dance in Edmonton, Calgary and Mexico. I also took African drumming classes from Mohamed Tounkara and world renowned master drummer Mamady Keita. I was the first in Canada to complete the first 3 levels of the drumming program at Tam Tam Mandingue djembe Academy in Mexico, tested by master Mamady Keita. After the program, I opened an African drumming and dance school "Sangea Academy". Through Sangea Academy I teach African dance combined with fitness called "Afro Fit" and facilitate a drumming workshop called "Drum Speak" which has been very effective in team building. Over the years, I have had over 5000 participants in my drum speak workshops. I also teach African drumming using Mamady Keita's teaching structure, teaching the history of West African drumming and proper techniques. I intend to use my music and art to create awareness of the injustice in the world and inspire others to take pride in celebrating their culture.
I believe music is a tool used to unite the community. |
A native of Salvador, Brazil, Reni's focusses on Afro-Brazilian rhythms such as samba de roda, samba reggae, and rhythms from the Afro-Brazilian tradition of Candomblé. Reni Ferreira started training capoeira in Salvador, Brazil at age 5 and has since been bestowed the title "Contre-Mestre of Capoeira” by Associação de Capoeira Mestre Bimba (the oldest academy of traditional Capoeira Regional in Brazil). Reni has been teaching and performing capoeira at The Capoeira Academy of Edmonton since 2001. His contributions to the local multicultural community were recognized with a City of Edmonton Cultural Diversity in the Arts Award in 2009. Through the support of the Edmonton Arts Council, Reni recently had an opportunity to pursue an intensive Brazilian percussion program with a series of highly-respected instructors from Brazil. To keep his skills sharp while living in Canada's winter wonderland, Reni regularly travels to study Brazilian percussion from top instructors from Salvador, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

With a primary focus on samba no pé and the Afro-Brazilian dance styles of Salvador, expect to find the classic samba step, samba de roda, axé, samba reggae, maculêlê, and movements of the Orixás from the Afro-Brazilian tradition of Candomblé in her dance classes. Amanda has been blessed with the opportunity to train with leading dance instructors in Brazil and throughout North America. Through the support of the Edmonton Arts Council, she recently had an opportunity to pursue three intensive Brazilian dance training programs with a series of highly-respected dance instructors from throughout Brazil. To keep in top form, Amanda travels annually to participate in intensive dance and music training sessions with top instructors from the cities of Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Amanda works with her husband Reni Reni Lima Ferreira, a Brazilian percussionist and capoeira professor, to bring energy and authenticity to her workshops and performances with live percussion. In her spare time, Amanda fuels her fire by performing Brazilian music with her husband and designing dance costumes.
