Ana is recognized as one of the top global instructors and practitioners of the Rio Janeiro samba style, and we are delighted she will be sharing her skill and experience with us here in Edmonton. About Ana Laidley:
Ana Carla Laidley was born and raised and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ana was exposed to the art and culture of Samba in early infancy/childhood because her father, Carlinhos Pandeiro de Ouro, was a very famous musician of the most traditional samba school, Estacao Primeira de Mangueira. Anas mother was one of the first Passistas (Samba dancers) who performed with several renowned artists and performing groups in Brazil and internationally. Ana's debut in the Samba Schools parade happened when she was 5 years old and she paraded for over 20 years. Once she immigrated to USA, Ana taught samba by integrating traditional and contemporary Samba styles. Ana's class provides a space to people to develop their knowledge and understanding of the Brazilian culture as well as reconnect with their body, mind, and soul!

Workshop Schedule
Friday, June 10
6:00 - 7:30 pm Introductory/Intermediate Samba no Pé
In this workshop participants will learn a variety of samba steps from the basics to intermediate level steps and movements. This workshop will assist participants to increase self and spatial awareness and build confidence in their ability to execute the samba step. This class will be focussed on students with no experience or recent experience in samba, but will be open to all skill levels. This class will feature live music! 7:30 - 9:00 pm Samba de Malandro This workshop is designed to teach the history and context of the 50's male samba! Ana creates a special environment that facilitates participants' immersion into the malandro's characterization in world! Both men and women are encouraged to participate in this class, and be sure to bring your own fedora hat! This class will be designed for introductory skill levels. |

Saturday, June 11
12:00 - 1:30 pm Samba de Passo Marcado
Ana explores the extensive variety of breaks, transitions, grooves, and "marked steps". Conjointly with participants, Ana creates a nice simple routine at the end of class. This is a very fun way for students to dance together, improve transitioning, and creating their own personal styles. 1:45 - 3:15 pm Samba de Raiz This workshop covers elements, basics, and fundamental steps of dances that originated samba such as Jongo, Samba de Roda, Samba de Coco, Lundu and Maxixe. Participants will learn how to implement the new vocabulary to their Samba and expand their expressions through their dance. This class will be designed to an intermediate to advanced level. Students without prior samba experience with Samba Edmonton are requested to directly contact Amanda@sambaedmonton.ca prior to registration. 3:30 - 5:00 pm Advanced Samba no Pe In this workshop participants will learn a variety of intermediate to advanced samba steps/movements. This workshop will assist participants to increase self and spatial awareness as well as build stamina for performing in parades. More about Ana Laidley
Ana has created the group SambaNMotion and has choreographed several numbers that reflect her understanding and passion for the Samba de Malandro, Gafieira, and her respect to the varieties of style and movements of this Unique form of dance: SAMBA! Ana has taught in several Brazilian Events and has performed with different dance groups and Brazilian organizations. She has planned trips to Brazil to help her students to experience the Samba and Brazilian Culture and she had promoted several Brazilian events to promote and divulge the Brazilian Culture outside Brazil. Ana has been teaching at the Brasil Brasil Cultural Center in Los Angeles for 10 years and she has developed several specialized workshops (Samba, Sweat and Chicken Soup for the Soul, Super Samba Intensive, Samba Lele). Ana also is teaching at Casa de Cultura in Berkeley once a month where she is developing several projects that include workshops, performances and advanced training for samba dancers. Ana takes groups to Brasil to parade with Estacao Primeira de Mangueira. Ana is a regular guest instructor and judge of the annual Brazilian Samba Queen and King competition in Phoenix, Arizona.
